Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at both ends of the field

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.
