Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
